Virginia Tech freshman linebacker Isi Etute was arrested Wednesday in Blacksburg, Virginia, on a 2nd-Degree murder charge.
The Blacksburg police department responded to a welfare check Monday night when they discovered a deceased body of Jerry Smith. Investigators ruled the death a homicide. The investigators also ruled Isi Etute as a person of interest connected to the homicide.
ESPN’s David Hale released a statement from Virginia Tech on the situation. The statement reads, “Blacksburg police continue to lead this ongoing investigation, and the university will assist law enforcement agencies working the case in any way it can.”
Isi Etute committed to the Hokies back in July of 2020. Etute was rated as a three-star recruit by 247 sports. Virginia Tech announced that they would be suspending him from the football team until further notice. Etute is currently being held in Montgomery County Jail and scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday at 10:30 A.M. ET.
