First off, I like how physical he is when he is getting to the quarterback. I also like his block shedding ability, and he knows how to dodge defenders and get them out of his way to get to the quarterback. Even if he is being double-teamed, he still is too physical to be tamed. Another thing I liked about Beau was how hard he hits when he gets to the ball carrier. And last but not least, Tar-heel fans are getting a guy who is an elite pass blocker.
The only weakness I saw was he isn’t the fastest in the edge rusher position. But that is something he will be able to improve on in North Carolina. If he becomes even faster, maybe 2 tenths of a second faster, he could get to the quarterback faster for a sack. At times, I saw the quarterback not knowing Beau was coming right at him in his highlights. And because Beau isn’t the fastest, he threw it away in time.
In Beau’s 7 game season, he recorded 34 tackles, 13 TFL, and 5 sacks. In his first season, he recorded 58 tackles, 18.5 TFL, and 9 sacks, its fair to say this kid is a beast. Next season I think he will do about the same as his freshman season. I say Beau finishes his junior season with 54 tackles, 16 TFL, and 7 sacks.
Now let’s talk about how good I think he could be at North Carolina. My ceiling for Beau would be him being in the top 8 most sacks in Tar Heel history and a mid to late 2nd round pick. Why will Beau Atkinson be such a big pickup for the Tar Heel? Currently, the Tar Heels only have 2 backup edge rushers. And will bring more physicality to their defensive line. Last season the Tar Heels had problems getting to the quarterback or pressuring the quarterback.
So Tar Heel fans get excited about Beau Atkinson in 2022!
