Purdue Basketball: How far can Purdue go in the NCAA Tournament

The Purdue Boilermakers entered the 2021-22 season with high expectations. Many assume that this Purdue basketball team could make a run in the NCAA Tournament.

Season Breakdown

In the regular season, the Boilermakers had a record of 27-7 overall and 14-6 in conference play. Also, Purdue went 16-1 at home, 5-5 on the road, and 4-0 in neutral site games. This Purdue basketball team has had some wins that will have you thinking they’re the best team in the Big Ten and some losses that will have you scratching your head. Currently, the Boilermakers are 7-5 against quad 1 teams, 5-1 against quad 2 teams, 7-0 against quad 3 teams, and 5-0 against quad 4 teams. Some of Purdue’s wins have come against Illinois, Ohio State, Villanova, Iowa, and North Carolina this season. Their losses have come against Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Rutgers, and Michigan State.

Team breakdown

The Purdue Boilermakers are led by their head coach Matt Painter and star player Jaden Ivey. However, guys such as Zach Edey, Trevion Williams, Eric Hunter Jr, and Sasha Stefanovic have also been vital to Purdue’s success. This Purdue basketball team is good at many things. Purdue ranks 7th in scoring offense, 36th in free throw attempts, 53rd in free throws made, and 86th in fewest turnovers. However, Purdue still has one thing that is a problem: defense. Purdue is a team that has the tools to be one of the best defensive teams in the country, but they’re not. Ivey’s defense is lackluster at times, and Edey’s interior defense is bad for a 7’4 center.

How far can Purdue make it in the NCAA Tournament?

Honestly, the Purdue Boilermakers can make it to the elite 8. Purdue is a team with Talent, Coaching, and offense that can make a deep run in the tournament. But they are not a team I see getting to the final four due to their defense.
