College football week 1 - CJ Stroud

College Football: Week 1 recap

Week 1 was exciting, college football fans saw close games and a top 10 team lose on the road. Some top 25 teams were also on upset alert but managed to escape, but I will get into this article.

#7 Utah 26 at Florida 29

Florida won this game on the back of Anthony Richardson. Richardson showed up and showed out. Passing for 168 yards while having a 70% completion percentage. He consistently made 3rd down throws and extended plays with his legs. Richardson not only made plays with his arm, and he made them with his legs, rushing for 106 yards and 3 touchdowns. Florida’s defense looked improved as head coach Billy Napier and co-defensive coordinators Patrick Toney and Sean Spencer had the defense ready. The Gators’ defense only allowed 216 passing yards and 230 rushing yards.

Florida looked like a much different team compared to last year, they were never rattled and resilient. And they were the first team in college football to beat a top 10 team.

#5 Notre Dame 10 at #2 Ohio State 21

Before Saturday, if you talked to any college football fans, including I would tell you that Notre Dame at Ohio State wouldn’t be close by the 4th quarter. But that was far from what happened as the Fighting Irish were able to keep this game close and even lead for a majority of the game. But sadly, Notre Dame couldn’t pull out the victory, but their fans shouldn’t be mad or worried about this team, because Notre Dame went out and competed with a team that many analysts think has more talent than them at some skill positions. And Ohio State fans should be ecstatic because last season Buckeye fans saw their defense get torched by teams that could bully them on the line of Scrimmage, Only allowing Notre Dame to rush for 76 yards and average 5.6 yards per play.

#17 Pitt vs. West Virginia

What better game to kick off week 1 of college football than with the backyard brawl? There is no better way, this game had everything you wanted, from the crowd to the play on the field. Both JT Daniels and Kedon Slovis played well in their first starts with their new teams. Slovis passed for 308 yards and 1 touchdown, on the other side Daniels passed for 214 and 2 touchdowns. Sadly, Daniels also threw the game-losing interception that was returned for a touchdown. Pitt went on to win even after West Virginia tried to make a miraculous last effort after Daniels was not able to complete a pass to Resse Smith that would’ve gave west Virginia a chance to tie the ball game.

College football Week 1 quick recaps

# 3 Georgia 49 vs. #11 Oregon 3 – People thought this game would be close, but this game was over by halftime. Georgia scored on 7 out of 8 of their possessions, while Oregon had to punt on 4 out of 8 possessions. On the four possessions, Oregon didn’t punt Oregon, kicked a field goal, threw two interceptions, and failed to convert on 4th down.

#1 Alabama 55 vs. Utah State 0 – After week 1, I think it’s safe to say Albama looks like Alabama. Bryce Young passed for 195 yards and 5 touchdowns and ran for 100 yards and 1 touchdown. This game was over by the 1st quarter and was a snooze fest the whole time.

#13 NC State 21 vs East Carolina 20 – What a game this was. NC State was on upset alert on the road. The Pirates scored early, but the Wolfpack were able to score 21 unanswered, and it looked as if they were going to blow this game open. Then East Carolina responded with 13 points unanswered and even stopped NC State at the gal line, preventing them from putting away the game. Just as it looked like East Carolina was going to hit a walk-off field, East Carolina’s kicker missed, and NC State escaped from an upset on the road.

LSU 23 vs. Florida State 24 – I want to focus on the end of this game. LSU, down 24-17 needed a touchdown and an extra point to force overtime but on the punt, the returner Malik Nablers muffed the punt, and the Seminoles recovered the ball. On the following possession, Florida State looked as if they were going to score and put the game away for good, Florida State fumbled the ball at the 1-yard line, and LSU recovered. LSU then went on a 99-yard drive where Jayden Daniels connected with Jaray Jenkins for a touchdown making the score 24-23. All LSU needed was an extra point to force overtime, but the extra point was blocked, and the Seminoles escaped with a win.
